What's the Minimum Video Length for a TikTok In-Feed Ad?

Standard TikTok In-Feed ads must run at least 5 seconds, with a 60-second maximum; Spark Ads boosting existing organic posts aren't bound by this range.

A standard, non-Spark TikTok In-Feed ad must run at least 5 seconds, with a maximum of 60 seconds, per TikTok Ads Manager's official video ad specifications.

Spark Ads Follow a Different Rule

That 5-60 second window applies specifically to standard In-Feed ads built from creative uploaded directly to Ads Manager. Spark Ads — the format that boosts an existing organic TikTok post, whether the brand's own or a creator's with permission — inherit the length of whatever organic video is being boosted, which isn't bound by the 5-60 second In-Feed range. A brand can run a 3-minute organic video as a Spark Ad even though the same video would fail the minimum-length check as a standard In-Feed upload, since the two paths are reviewed under different rules.

The Full In-Feed Video Spec

Length isn't the only requirement TikTok checks on a standard In-Feed upload:

  • Resolution — minimum 540 x 960 pixels, recommended 720 x 1280 pixels or higher, at a 9:16 aspect ratio (1:1 and 16:9 are also accepted).
  • File size — maximum 500MB per video.
  • File format — .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp, or .avi.

A video under 5 seconds gets rejected at upload regardless of how well it otherwise meets the resolution and file size requirements, since the minimum-length check happens independently of the other technical checks.

Why TikTok Sets a 5-Second Floor

TikTok's own creative guidance recommends In-Feed videos land closer to 9-15 seconds for best engagement, well above the bare 5-second minimum. The floor itself exists mainly to rule out near-static image slideshows or single-frame creative being dressed up as video — 5 seconds is enough time to show at least one real moment of motion or product demonstration, which TikTok's feed-based, sound-on viewing format is built around.

TikTok's own data consistently points advertisers toward the shorter end of the allowed range rather than the full 60 seconds, since completion rate drops sharply as length increases in a feed where the next video is one swipe away. Treating 5-60 seconds as a hard legal range rather than a creative target is a common mistake — plenty of In-Feed ads that are technically compliant at 45 or 50 seconds underperform simply because they were built to the maximum instead of to what the feed format actually rewards.

Getting Creative Approved on the First Try

  • Build to 9-15 seconds as a default target, reserving the full range up to 60 seconds only for creative with a specific reason to run longer, like a tutorial or unboxing format.
  • Export at 9:16 and at least 720 x 1280 pixels, since TikTok's feed is a vertical, mobile-first surface and off-ratio creative gets cropped or letterboxed.
  • Use the organic Spark Ads path for content that's already proven itself organically, rather than re-uploading it as a fresh In-Feed asset and re-triggering the standard length and format checks.

Bottom Line

Standard TikTok In-Feed ads need at least 5 seconds and no more than 60, but build toward TikTok's own recommended 9-15 second range rather than treating the legal maximum as the creative target.
