Is Performance Max or Search Better for Lead Generation in 2026?

There's no clear winner: one study found Search beating Performance Max on overlapping terms, another found the gap insignificant, and Google frames Pmax as a complement.

There's no single, settled answer to whether Performance Max or standard Search campaigns perform better for lead generation in 2026 — the two most rigorous independent studies on the topic disagree with each other, and Google's own official guidance treats Performance Max as a complement to Search rather than a head-to-head alternative with a declared winner.

What the Two Competing Studies Found

Adalysis, a PPC auditing company, analyzed more than 3,300 non-retail Performance Max campaigns across roughly 503 accounts and found that on search terms where both Search and Performance Max were eligible to serve, Search had the higher click-through rate in about 65% of comparisons and the higher conversion rate in about 84% of comparisons. A separate analysis by Optmyzr, a competing PPC management platform, looked at similar keyword-overlap data and found no statistically significant performance difference in roughly 75% of cases, with Search outperforming Performance Max in about 19% and Performance Max outperforming Search in about 6%.

Why These Two Studies Don't Agree

Both companies sell PPC management and auditing tools that are more useful to advertisers running granular, hands-on Search campaigns than to advertisers leaning on Performance Max's automation — which doesn't make either study's data fabricated, but does mean both have a commercial stake in how they frame "cannibalization." The more defensible takeaway from two differently incentivized vendors landing on different conclusions from similar overlap data is that the real-world gap is small and account-dependent, not that one platform has a clear, repeatable performance edge.

What Google Itself Recommends

Google's own published best practices for Performance Max in lead generation explicitly position it as additive to Search — meant to capture reach and conversion volume beyond what keyword-based Search campaigns already reach — rather than as a direct substitute. Google's guidance also stresses getting conversion tracking right before judging either campaign type: using specific lead-quality actions like "Qualified Lead" or "Converted Lead," not just raw form submissions, and feeding offline sales outcomes back into the system through Enhanced Conversions for Leads so the algorithm optimizes toward leads that actually close.

Running Performance Max against raw form-fill tracking instead of qualified-lead data is one of the more common reasons it looks worse for lead gen than it actually performs once lead quality is accounted for.

What This Means If You're Deciding Between Them

Account maturity and conversion-tracking quality matter more to the outcome than which platform you pick in the abstract. A handful of individual agency case studies report Performance Max beating Search on cost per qualified lead once CRM data is fed back in, while others report Performance Max generating cheap but low-quality leads when it's only ever fed generic form-fill data — both outcomes are consistent with the same underlying mechanism: Performance Max performs closer to its ceiling when it has better signal, and closer to its floor when it doesn't.

Bottom Line

Don't pick between Performance Max and Search as if one has a proven, universal lead-gen edge — fix your conversion tracking to count qualified leads first, run both together, and judge the comparison on your own account's data rather than importing a verdict from either study above.

Pro Tip

Always test your campaigns with small budgets first. Scale up only after you've proven profitability and optimized your conversion funnel.
