A Google Performance Max asset group allows up to 20 images for each of three image types — landscape (1.91:1), square (1:1), and portrait (4:5) — according to Google Ads Help Center documentation on image assets for Performance Max campaigns. The same asset group also allows up to 5 logo images and up to 5 videos.

The Minimums Required to Publish

  • Images — at least 1 landscape and 1 square image are required, plus at least 2 portrait images, before Google will let the asset group go live.
  • Videos — Google lists a minimum of 0, meaning an asset group can technically launch without video, though Google recommends including at least 1 and will auto-generate one from existing images and text if none is provided.
  • Logos — at least 1 square logo is required for most asset group setups.

Why the 20-Image Cap Exists Per Type, Not in Total

Performance Max serves ads across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps from a single campaign, and each surface needs a different aspect ratio to fill its placements cleanly. Capping each image type at 20 — rather than one shared pool — gives Google's system enough landscape options for Display and YouTube placements and enough portrait options for Discover and in-feed placements, without one aspect ratio crowding out the others.

Google's help documentation recommends roughly 3 to 4 images each for landscape and square, well under the 20-image ceiling. The maximum exists to give the system enough raw material to test combinations across every placement type, not because every asset group needs to be filled to the cap — most advertisers get full placement coverage with well under half of the available slots used.

Logos and Videos Follow the Same Pattern

Logo images are capped at 5 each for the square and landscape logo fields, well below the 20-image ceiling on regular images, since a logo doesn't need the same creative variation testing that photo or lifestyle imagery does. Videos are capped at 5 per asset group, and Google requires any video asset to run longer than 10 seconds to be eligible.

What Happens If an Image Doesn't Match the Aspect Ratio

An image submitted for the landscape or square field that doesn't match the required ratio is rejected when it's linked to the asset group, not flagged earlier at upload — a detail that matters when building asset groups through the Google Ads API rather than the Ads Manager interface, where the UI usually catches mismatched ratios before they're attached.

Bottom Line

Plan Performance Max creative around roughly 3-4 well-chosen images per type rather than maxing out at 20, but know the ceiling is there if testing calls for more variation — and don't forget the hard minimums of 1 landscape, 1 square, and 2 portrait images before the asset group can publish at all.

Pro Tip

Always test your campaigns with small budgets first. Scale up only after you've proven profitability and optimized your conversion funnel.
