Do You Need Certification to Run Cryptocurrency Ads on Google in 2026?

Yes. Google requires crypto exchanges and wallet providers to hold active certification, and since May 2026 any advertiser can apply directly in-account.

Yes. Google requires cryptocurrency exchanges, software and hardware wallets, coin trusts, and complex speculative crypto financial products to hold an active Google Ads certification before they can advertise. As of May 2026, Google opened that certification application process to all advertisers directly inside their Google Ads account, retiring the older Help Center submission form.

What Needs Certification

Certification applies specifically to crypto exchanges and wallet software, hardware wallet manufacturers, coin trusts, and what Google classifies as complex speculative financial products built on cryptocurrency. General crypto-adjacent content, like educational or news content, isn't covered by the same requirement.

How the Process Changed in 2026

Google introduced in-account certification applications starting in February 2026, rolling the feature out gradually to advertisers over several weeks. By May 2026, the in-account application process opened to every advertiser, and Google's Help Center no longer accepts certification requests through its older external form. Certifications and applications that were already in progress before the rollout weren't affected by the switch.

Country-Specific Licensing Still Applies on Top of Certification

Certification alone doesn't clear every market. Google's February 2026 policy update allows exchange ads targeting Indonesia only when the advertiser holds a license from Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK). A July 2025 update separately requires exchanges and software wallets targeting Canada to register with FINTRAC (CANAFE) as a money services business. Both requirements sit on top of, not instead of, the base Google Ads certification.

What Happens If You Advertise Without Certification

Crypto policy violations don't trigger immediate account suspension. Google issues a warning at least seven days before any suspension takes effect, giving advertisers a window to get certified or pull non-compliant ads before losing account access — a meaningfully softer enforcement path than Google applies to categories like cannabis advertising.

Why the Certification Process Changed

Routing crypto certification through Google's own Help Center application form created a bottleneck, since every application needed manual review before an advertiser could run a single ad. Moving the process in-account lets Google surface certification status, pending requirements, and rejection reasons directly inside the interface advertisers already use to manage campaigns, which is also why the Help Center's external submission form was retired rather than kept running alongside the new system. For agencies managing several crypto clients, this also means certification status is now visible per account rather than tracked separately through old email confirmations.

Bottom Line

Apply for crypto advertising certification directly inside your Google Ads account before launching any campaign for an exchange, wallet, or related product, and separately confirm whether your target country has its own licensing requirement — Indonesia's OJK license and Canada's FINTRAC registration are both required in addition to, not in place of, Google's own certification. Treat certification status as something to recheck before every new campaign launch, not a one-time setup step, since country-specific rules keep expanding.

Pro Tip

Always test your campaigns with small budgets first. Scale up only after you've proven profitability and optimized your conversion funnel.
